Retail Energy Transition
Sustainability and Large-Scale Retail: Supermercati Tosano’s Green Transformation
Supermercati Tosano, a leading player in the large-scale retail sector, has launched a strategic plan aimed at promoting the responsible use of resources and reducing the environmental footprint of its real estate portfolio.
Retail stores and logistics centers in the GDO sector are characterized by constant and high energy consumption (cold chain systems, lighting, logistics), making it essential to maximize the available rooftop photovoltaic capacity and optimize system layout to efficiently meet the Group’s energy demand.
To address this need, BayWa r.e. Power Solutions designed and installed two tailor-made photovoltaic systems in the Veneto region, with a total capacity exceeding 2.4 MWp. This project brings the Group Tosano’s total solar energy capacity across its facilities to over 3.6 MWp.
The installations include:
-
The logistics center in Cerea (Verona), with 3,422 photovoltaic panels.
-
The retail store in Montecchio Maggiore (Vicenza), with 1,020 photovoltaic panels.

Surplus clean energy (over 600,000 kWh/year) fed directly into the grid. |

Green Efficiency: Measurable Positive Impact.
A project that translates ESG objectives into tangible results, generating both immediate and long-lasting benefits for the company.
-
Maximum Energy Self-Consumption: The energy produced is almost entirely absorbed by the facilities (up to 100% at the Cerea site), significantly reducing dependence on the national grid in highly energy-intensive sectors.
-
Significant Emissions Reduction: The interventions prevent the release of over 1,200 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere, accelerating the brand’s sustainability journey.
-
Optimized Use of Rooftop Space: Through a careful study of roof layouts, installed capacity per square meter was maximized, ensuring the best possible return on investment.
-
Valorization of Surplus Energy: The non-self-consumed energy from the Montecchio retail store is fed into the grid, transforming a passive asset (the roof) into a source of economic value.
